Il luogoThe place

In sardo, abba è l’acqua. In Sardinian, abba means water.

abba (sardo) — acqua(Sardinian) — water

Abbamariana carries water in its name, and it is also the name of the estate’s main spring. From there, and from the other springs, water reaches the historic stazzi, the cork oaks, the orchard and the vineyard, all of which live on Abbamariana water.

The vineyard sits on the hillside at 276 metres: a hectare and a half of vermentino, about five thousand vines planted in 2006 and 2007, bush-trained and on trellis, on granite. Around it the estate stretches over more than fifty hectares of pasture and cork oaks, with rock breaking through the ground. Lake Liscia is in view from the rows, and Mount Limbara rises to the south-west. Wind, the gap between day and night temperatures, the lake, the exposure and the rocks together make a microclimate of its own.

Vermentino reached Sardinia at the end of the nineteenth century, from the Iberian peninsula by way of Corsica, and found its ideal ground in the weathered granite of Gallura.

Un antico stazzo in terra di dolmen. An old stazzo in the land of dolmens.

The estate is an old stazzo, the traditional farmstead of Gallura, in an area of archaeological interest rich in dolmens and historic stazzi. Four dolmens stand in the territory of Luras, Alzoledda, Ciuledda, Billella and Ladas: finds from two of them date them to around 3200 BC. Not far away, on the shores of the lake, grow the ancient wild olive trees of Santu Baltolu di Karana. The great patriarch, Su Babbu Mannu, also known as S’Ozzastru, is held to be among the oldest trees in the world: up to 4,000 years.

Marco is not Sardinian. Like the sailors in Crêuza de mä, he came in from the sea and found land here. He fell in love with Sardinia and with the philosophy that surrounds the world of natural wine. Here, close to nature, he finds the space to pursue what he loves in his free time.

Here, thanks to the big hearts of a few people from Gallura and to word of mouth, the dream is coming true.

La memoria del luogoThe memory of the place

Su Rodu, l’aia.Su Rodu, the threshing floor.

Il pane di tutto l’anno cominciava lì.Before the vineyard, life here ran on wheat and livestock. Like every stazzo in Gallura, this one had its threshing floor, su rodu: the open ground where wheat cut by hand was brought, stacked and threshed to free the grain from the straw. The year’s bread began there.

Above the stazzo, one granite rock holds up another, shaped like a hat.

Vigna e vinoVineyard and wine

A wine cannot be the same every year: every vintage tells a different story, born of nature and completed in the wine, in its own time and its own space.

Albatros

Marco sails, and the name comes from there: the albatross that follows ships on the open sea, the sailors’ companion that poets have celebrated in their verses.

L’eleganza della semplicità.The elegance of simplicity.

Albatros is a fragrant, balanced white: freshness blends with a pleasant softness, and the sip is clean and enveloping. A generous extract gives it structure and presence, with notes of fruit. Dry, with very low residual sugar and modest acidity, it is a contemporary vermentino, made to be drunk and shared.

A’Ultimera

A’Ultimera vuol dire l’ultima spiaggia. A’Ultimera ha dato origine ad Albatros.A’Ultimera means the last beach, the last resort. It was born in the family: feet in the vat, they trod the grapes, laughing, not knowing that everything hung on that must. It was the last try before giving up. The wine came good, the adventure began. A’Ultimera gave rise to Albatros.
